What Is Sugar Art?

by Paul Watson

There are a lot of things that can go into different types of baking. Along with baking things like cupcakes and cakes, there is also the icing used to cover them or the fondant that can cover them or simply be used to add décor, and there is also sugar art. If you aren't yet too familiar with sugar art, then you should keep reading this information, as it will touch base on some of the different important things that you might like to know about sugar art.

What is sugar art?

Sugar art involves creating specific decorations, items, or even sculptures using confectionery sugar in a specific way that causes it to harden into different shapes. Sugar art can be used to create something as small and simple as clear bubbles to decorate a cake that depicts a bear in an overflowing bathtub. Or, sugar art can itself be the masterpiece where the sugar art is a large dragon centerpiece that gets displayed on a table. It's important to note that there are a lot of different techniques that can be used to get certain shapes. There is creating lace, spinning it, casting it, and even blowing it.

In what ways is sugar art used?

Sugar art is used in many ways, some of which you may not even realize that it's sugar art you are seeing. Sometimes, the movies will use sugar art for scenes where they need a glass to be broken, but they don't want the actors to end up getting cut, or it may even be used for a window that is to be broken. The reason for using sugar art, besides the obvious safety benefits of not being cut, is that it is also inexpensive to use and it breaks in a manner that is convincing when trying to replicate broken glass.

Sugar art is also used to decorate many things. It can be used as decorations to put on or around cakes and cupcakes, but it can even be used as a bow on a gift wrapper. There are shows in which people create huge works of sugar art in an attempt to win the competition for the best sugar art display, as well as other titles the show may give awards for. Sugar art can even be used to create different décor for tables, such as having sugar art fruits displayed in fruit bowls and people can eat the sugar art fruit.
